The reliability of remote photoplethysmography under low illumination and elevated heart rates

The reliability of remote photoplethysmography under low illumination and elevated heart rates

December 3, 2025December 4, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) offers a non-invasive means of estimating heart rate in telemedicine settings. Yet its reliability remains uncertain due to the limited diversity and ecological validity of existing benchmark datasets. In this work,…

How Multi-Agent AI Is Reshaping Patient Experience at Scale

December 1, 2025December 2, 2025Healthcare IT Today

It’s easy to talk about AI in broad terms. It’s harder to show how the technology supports a person trying to navigate benefits, costs, or a complex health journey. That’s exactly what Mike Serbinis…

A multi-criterion feature integration framework for accurate diagnosis of Sjögren’s disease using routine laboratory tests

November 28, 2025November 28, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Sjögren’s disease (SjD) is a common systemic autoimmune disease that remains difficult to diagnose early due to non-specific symptoms and lack of definitive biomarkers. This multicentre retrospective cohort study analysed data from 34,958 patients…

Fair positive unlabeled learning for predicting undiagnosed Alzheimer’s disease in diverse electronic health records

November 27, 2025November 28, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), the most common neurodegenerative disease, is underdiagnosed and more prominent in underrepresented groups. We performed semi-supervised positive unlabeled learning (SSPUL) coupled with racial bias mitigation for equitable prediction of undiagnosed AD…

The hidden risk of round numbers and sharp thresholds in clinical practice

The hidden risk of round numbers and sharp thresholds in clinical practice

November 22, 2025November 22, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Clinical decision-making often simplifies continuous risk data into discrete levels using round-number thresholds. These simplifications can distort risk assessments. To systematically uncover these distortions, we develop an interpretable machine learning model that identifies anomalies…

The physical space of the hospital will be gradually digitized until virtually every object and sensor becomes part of the so-called 'Internet of Things.' These innovations can broadly be categorized as either clinical or experiential, though some will be both. Clinical innovations will involve gathering ever more "signals" from the patient (infrared, sound, electrophysiology, pulse-oximeter, facial expression, etc.) to be sifted in real time through machine-learning algorithms that will help physicians refine their understanding of diagnosis and prognosis in ways we can only imagine today. Experiential innovations will allow health systems and their partners to take a page from Netflix, using the engagement opportunity of the acute care episode to stream digital content to patients and families through TVs, tablets and their own devices from home.
