Eye tracking insights into physician behaviour with safe and unsafe explainable AI recommendations

Eye tracking insights into physician behaviour with safe and unsafe explainable AI recommendations

August 3, 2024August 3, 2024npj Digital Medicine

We studied clinical AI-supported decision-making as an example of a high-stakes setting in which explainable AI (XAI) has been proposed as useful (by theoretically providing physicians with context for the AI suggestion and thereby…

Joint AI-driven event prediction and longitudinal modeling in newly diagnosed and relapsed multiple myeloma

Joint AI-driven event prediction and longitudinal modeling in newly diagnosed and relapsed multiple myeloma

July 29, 2024July 29, 2024npj Digital Medicine

Multiple myeloma management requires a balance between maximizing survival, minimizing adverse events to therapy, and monitoring disease progression. While previous work has proposed data-driven models for individual tasks, these approaches fail to provide a…

Estimation of ventilatory thresholds during exercise using respiratory wearable sensors

Estimation of ventilatory thresholds during exercise using respiratory wearable sensors

July 27, 2024July 27, 2024npj Digital Medicine

Ventilatory thresholds (VTs) are key physiological parameters used to evaluate physical performance and determine aerobic and anaerobic transitions during exercise. Current assessment of these parameters requires ergospirometry, limiting evaluation to laboratory or clinical settings….

Hidden flaws behind expert-level accuracy of multimodal GPT-4 vision in medicine

July 23, 2024July 23, 2024npj Digital Medicine

Recent studies indicate that Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 with Vision (GPT-4V) outperforms human physicians in medical challenge tasks. However, these evaluations primarily focused on the accuracy of multi-choice questions alone. Our study extends the…

Estimating the household secondary attack rate and serial interval of COVID-19 using social media

July 20, 2024July 20, 2024npj Digital Medicine

We propose a method to estimate the household secondary attack rate (hSAR) of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom based on activity on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Conventional methods of…

The physical space of the hospital will be gradually digitized until virtually every object and sensor becomes part of the so-called 'Internet of Things.' These innovations can broadly be categorized as either clinical or experiential, though some will be both. Clinical innovations will involve gathering ever more "signals" from the patient (infrared, sound, electrophysiology, pulse-oximeter, facial expression, etc.) to be sifted in real time through machine-learning algorithms that will help physicians refine their understanding of diagnosis and prognosis in ways we can only imagine today. Experiential innovations will allow health systems and their partners to take a page from Netflix, using the engagement opportunity of the acute care episode to stream digital content to patients and families through TVs, tablets and their own devices from home.
