A generative AI teaching assistant for personalized learning in medical education

A generative AI teaching assistant for personalized learning in medical education

November 4, 2025November 4, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Medical education faces a scalability crisis, where rising class sizes strain individualized instruction, while students increasingly adopt unvalidated Generative AI (GenAI) tools for individualized learning support. This study investigated how medical students integrate constrained…

Toward governance of artificial intelligence in pediatric healthcare

Toward governance of artificial intelligence in pediatric healthcare

October 30, 2025October 31, 2025npj Digital Medicine

AI is transforming healthcare, yet pediatric adoption remains limited and governance is underdeveloped. We review existing frameworks and identify pediatric-specific gaps: insufficient stakeholder engagement, developmentally appropriate consent/assent, limited bias mitigation, and unclear accountability. An…

Electrophysiological signatures predict the therapeutic window of deep brain stimulation electrode contacts

Electrophysiological signatures predict the therapeutic window of deep brain stimulation electrode contacts

October 29, 2025October 30, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Identifying the optimal parameters is a complex task. Here, we investigated whether electrophysiology, combined with machine learning, can support contact selection. We applied…

Actigraphy-based detection of isolated REM sleep behavior disorder: multicenter validation across devices and populations

October 29, 2025October 30, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Scalable home-based detection of isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is essential for early care, prevention trials, and identifying candidates for neuroprotective interventions against synucleinopathies. We previously showed that high-resolution wrist actigraphy (Axivity AX6)…

Learning as a missing component of digital health, environment and climate change

October 29, 2025October 29, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Despite its rapid advancement, digital health has little considered issues of climate change or environmental degradation. As the digital health community begin to engage with this critical issue scholars have started mapping progression in…

Do we need AI guardians to protect us from health information overload?

October 27, 2025October 28, 2025npj Digital Medicine

The rise of digital health technologies has provided individuals with unprecedented access to biometric data and health insights. However, excess monitoring may contribute to fatigue, anxiety, and information overload, sometimes reducing engagement and worsening…

Benchmarking large language models for personalized, biomarker-based health intervention recommendations

October 27, 2025October 27, 2025npj Digital Medicine

The use of large language models (LLMs) in clinical diagnostics and intervention planning is expanding, yet their utility for personalized recommendations for longevity interventions remains opaque. We extended the BioChatter framework to benchmark LLMs’…

Active remote monitoring of long-term conditions with mobile devices: a systematic review of cost-effectiveness analyses

October 25, 2025October 25, 2025npj Digital Medicine

This study aimed to identify and appraise published cost-effectiveness analyses of mobile device-based active remote monitoring technologies for long-term conditions. A systematic literature review (PROSPERO: CRD42023406364) identified studies from Medline and Embase (2008 until…

Real-time detection of respiratory circuit events in mechanical ventilation using deep learning

Real-time detection of respiratory circuit events in mechanical ventilation using deep learning

October 25, 2025October 25, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Respiratory circuit events, including fluid accumulation and circuit or cuff leakage during mechanical ventilation, increase ventilator-associated event risks but often go undetected. We developed a convolutional neural network analyzing 57,296 annotated breaths (26,768 training/internal…

Quotes

With respect to healthcare, I see digital transformation as a formula: simplified patient journey + streamlined employee workflow = a memorable experience. The ability to distill the patient touch points down to only what is necessary, make the behind-the-scenes workflow less cumbersome (reducing silos and friction points) and accelerate the entire throughput with carefully selected and complementary technology is the essence of digital transformation. Process is always upstream from technology, and any digital effort should take that into consideration.
