Equipping mathematical models for hospital dynamics using information theory

Equipping mathematical models for hospital dynamics using information theory

November 12, 2025November 13, 2025npj Digital Medicine

We propose metrics from information theory to characterize the clinical and operational dynamics of hospitals. Ergodicity, the equality of time- and space-averages within a dynamical system, ensures its stationarity. Surprisal, the log-inverse of probability,…

Early detection of G2SCH through machine learning analysis of physical examination metrics

Early detection of G2SCH through machine learning analysis of physical examination metrics

November 12, 2025November 12, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Grade 2 subclinical hypothyroidism (G2SCH) is associated with an increased risk of various diseases but is rarely detected before symptom onset. This study aims to develop a machine learning-based prediction model for G2SCH using…

SPEED-TR: a self-distilled and pre-trained transformer model for enhanced ECG detection of tricuspid regurgitation

November 12, 2025November 12, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) remains underdiagnosed due to the lack of effective screening tools. We developed a self-distilled and pre-trained transformer model for detecting TR (SPEED-TR) from electrocardiography. The model was trained using 466,149 electrocardiogram-echocardiogram…

Automated detection of radiolucent foreign body aspiration on chest CT using deep learning

Automated detection of radiolucent foreign body aspiration on chest CT using deep learning

November 10, 2025November 10, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Radiolucent foreign body aspiration (FBA) remains diagnostically challenging due to its subtle imaging signatures on chest CT scans, often leading to delayed or missed diagnoses. We present a deep learning model integrating MedpSeg, a…

Reporting guidelines for studies involving generative artificial intelligence applications: what do I use, and when?

Reporting guidelines for studies involving generative artificial intelligence applications: what do I use, and when?

November 7, 2025November 7, 2025npj Digital Medicine

With a growing number of studies applying generative artificial intelligence (GAI) models for health purposes, reporting standards are being developed to guide authors in this space. We describe the currently available reporting guidelines that…

A generalizable 3D framework and model for self-supervised learning in medical imaging

A generalizable 3D framework and model for self-supervised learning in medical imaging

November 7, 2025November 7, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Current self-supervised learning (SSL) methods for 3D medical imaging rely on simple pretext formulations and organ- or modality-specific datasets, limiting their generalizability and scalability. We present 3DINO, a cutting-edge SSL method adapted to 3D…

A Bayesian-driven approach to identify racial inequities in longitudinal care delivery

A Bayesian-driven approach to identify racial inequities in longitudinal care delivery

November 6, 2025November 7, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Measures of healthcare quality and equity often overlook when care is delivered, potentially masking important disparities. We present a novel, time-aware approach to detect racial inequities in hospice use among 100,480 Medicare beneficiaries with…

Interpretable arrhythmia detection in ECG scans using deep learning ensembles: a genetic programming approach

Interpretable arrhythmia detection in ECG scans using deep learning ensembles: a genetic programming approach

November 6, 2025November 7, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in developed countries. This study introduces deep learning ensembles for arrhythmia detection and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence prediction from electrocardiogram scans, supported by explainable artificial intelligence…

Evaluating clinical AI summaries with large language models as judges

Evaluating clinical AI summaries with large language models as judges

November 6, 2025November 6, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) contain vast clinical data that are difficult for providers to synthesize. Generative AI with Large Language Models (LLMs) can summarize records to reduce cognitive burden, but ensuring accuracy requires reliable…

Improving dataset transparency in dermatologic Artificial Intelligence using a dataset nutrition label

November 5, 2025November 6, 2025npj Digital Medicine

Biased and poorly documented dermatology datasets pose risks to the development of safe and generalizable artificial intelligence (AI) tools. We created a Dataset Nutrition Label (DNL) for multiple dermatology datasets to support transparent and…

It all comes back to helping patients. That's the reason why we have an innovations office. We have some of the best physicians, scientists and engineers in the world right here in Cleveland who come up with brilliant ideas every day. And we need a way of bringing these to the market to help patients today and in the future. We want to reduce healthcare costs if we can come up with a less expensive way of doing something. We need to innovate around what we traditionally do but then also look at new avenues that we can explore to impact patient care.
